MAE ADVOCATE CORNER
Duty Free Lunch
GAE UniServ staff met with the superintendent to discuss the illegal implementation of “duty free lunch” at the elementary schools. After discussions were held it was determined that the law was being broken and a letter correcting matters was sent to all elementary principals.

NOTE: State law requires that every elementary teacher be given a 30 minute uninterrupted duty free lunch. No one can decide differently for teachers. Further the law states that teachers cannot be given additional duties as the result of having 30 minutes duty free lunch.

If you believe your rights have been violated under this law you should report to the MAE representative at your school or to the UniServ office. Actions of this nature violate not only the law but also the Educator’s Code of Ethics.

Annual Evaluation Process
A grievance was filed regarding the improper handling of the annual evaluation process during the 05-06 school year. MAE grieved the timeliness, appropriateness and ethicalness of the use of the evaluation process by an evaluator. After an “informal” hearing at the superintendent’s level it was determined that MAE was right and the invalid evaluation was thrown out.

NOTE: State law requires that all annual evaluations take place by April 1 each school year. This includes classroom assessments, conferences, and annual evaluation conferences. Further it should be noted that Murray has its own evaluation tool (MCTEP) and a manual outlining procedures for implementing it. Failure to follow procedure may not only violate state law but also may be a violation of the Code of Ethics.

If you believe your rights have been violated under this law it should be reported to the MAE representative at your school or should be reported to the UniServ office.

Retirees

MAE and GAE representatives spoke with the superintendent and board members regarding allowing retiring teachers to make up three in-service days prior to May 31, 2005. MAE was unsuccessful in gaining this option for retirees but was the only organization to advocate for retirees.

NOTE: Recent school calendars reflect a change in policy with in-service scheduled to end by May 31.
