The Teacher’s Guide

to Online Curriculum Resources

Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) members and staff compiled these E-Resources from various places for the purpose of leading teachers to internet-based instructional materials that might prove useful as supplements and enhancements to existing curricula.  GAE cannot vouch for the quality or appropriateness of the contents of these sources.  GAE urges teachers to preview and screen these sites as thoroughly as possible before incorporating them into units of instruction.  GAE assumes no liability for the contents of these internet-based resources.

Think Tank

http://thinktank.4teachers.org/

Think Tank is designed to help students (grades 3-8) develop research topics for reports and projects. Based on the type of topic assigned, the students can refine it by choosing from a variety of suggestions and by using a random topic generator. This helps students learn how to narrow a topic so that it is more manageable for internet research.

    Free Yearlong Professional Development
                 for Schools in Georgia

NCTE recently introduced CoLEARN (Centers of Literacy Education Achievement, Research, and Networking) http://colearn.ncte.org an innovative online professional development and classroom research initiative.  As part of the rollout of CoLEARN and to provide special opportunities for teachers in the area of our Annual Convention in November, McDougal Littell Publishing has agreed to sponsor the CoLEARN program in 14 schools. This means that 14 schools in Georgia will be able to access the CoLEARN online staff development program during the 2002-03 school year, at no charge.

What is CoLEARN?

Fundamentally, CoLEARN is a school and/or district level staff development program that provides NCTE professional journal articles, book chapters, audio and video clips, communication tools, and mentorship assistance to local study groups of teachers who can pursue queries offered by the national CoLEARN research panel or their own questions about student learning and achievement.

It includes a strong teacher-research component and provides many opportunities for groups who are interested in alternative assessment programs or inquiry-based learning to build a national network.

To learn more and explore the CoLEARN program, visit:    http://colearn.ncte.org

NCTE Annual Convention and CoLEARN

Each CoLEARN site will receive one free registration to NCTE’s Annual Convention this November 21-26, in Atlanta. We are planning a strand of sessions at the convention to facilitate exchange and learning among CoLEARN participants.  In addition, the Annual Convention offers more than 400 sessions on topics ranging from Shakespeare to technology and everything in between.  For more information about Annual Convention in Atlanta, go to:    http://www.ncte.org/convention/2002/

How Do I Join?

I hope to work with representatives from schools in Georgia over the next few weeks to introduce you to the program, and to facilitate Convention registrations for all who can attend.  I would be happy to provide more information about CoLEARN and about the free site sponsorships in Georgia.  Please send me an email at achamley@ncte.org.

I look forward to working with schools in your state.  Feel free to pass this information on to anyone you think might be interested.
